Well-placed sources within the party said Professor Ncube is locked in a bitter tussle with some of his deputies who want out of the Alliance saying Nelson Chamisa, the leader of the pact, lacks morale and is bound to abuse power in the near future.
Last week, Chamisa announced a raft of changes to the Alliance leadership, including the appointment of Welshman Ncube and Morgen Komichi as vice-presidents in a move seen as trying to consolidate his position ahead of the elective congress next year.
A source who spoke to this publication after an MDC meeting held in the city on Saturday, said disgruntled members were told to jump ship following heated arguments between the factions.
“During the candidate selection period just before the elections, Chamisa undermined one of the pact’s agreement by unilaterally fielding candidates in constituencies that had been reserved for other Alliance partners and people were not happy”, said the source.
“That’s why there are divisions in my party right now. Quite a number of members want us to pull out and in the meeting those opposed to the idea of a pact were told pointblank to either chip in or chip out.”
When reached for comment, MDC national spokesperson, Kurauone Chihwayi could neither confirm nor deny the allegations professing ignorance on the issue.
“I am not aware of a group that is opposed to the idea. Disgruntled members can exhaust all internal processes to have grey areas addressed. No one will be victimised for suggestions or complaints”, Chihwayi said.
The Ncube led MDC is part of a grouping that contested the just ended harmonised elections under the MDC Alliance banner.
