Bulawayo -COMMUTER omnibus operators smiled their way to filling stations yesterday as they received free fuel sponsored by the state to transport people to the venue where President Emmerson Mnangagwa commissioned million dollar projects in the city.
A long queue could be seen along Luveve road as kombis lined up to refuel, a development which some taxi operators expressed joy over, as it translated to extra fuel for their tanks.
However, to Mgcini Ndlovu, a 36 year old commuter omnibus operator, the President’s visit should bring development to the city , not just a ‘few litres of fuel’.
“Yes today was good as this meant a boom to our business, but to me it doesn’t really matter. What we want is to be able to afford to buy houses at reasonable rates,” he said.

Ndlovu explained how he was retrenched from one of the companies in the city before fulfilling his hopes for a better life. To him, a better life is being able to afford housing and be able to put food on the table without a hassle.
He said he hopes the housing projects being spearheaded by the government will be accessible to the ordinary men and not only to a privileged few and that this Presidential visit will benefit the community through employment creation.
In the past we have seen only rich people being able to buy these houses as the stands are expensive,” said Ndlovu.
“My call is for the new government to do things differently this time around and have the ordinary person in mind.”
His sentiments are not unique to him, but represent a wider feeling from most Zimbabweans who are looking to the government to provide affordable housing and provide opportunities for them to better their lives.
This reporter also caught up with vendors who called on the government to change the trajectory of only announcing projects which end up as ‘white elephants’.
They implored the recently sworn in government to prioritise implementation of projects that will benefit communities and improve their livelihoods.
“We are tired of hearing that the President has commissioned this and that but we don’t really see these things materialising. We want to see projects taking off and employment being created,” Langelihle Ngwenya, a vendor within the central business district, said.
President Mnangagwa was in the city where he commissioned a $2 billion housing project and a $2 million tomato processing plant; Hopeville Housing Project and the Turning Matabeleland Green (TMG) Tomato Processing Plant respectively. He pledged government’s support to companies which strive towards the attainment of the national vision.He also called on the adoption and adaptation of appropriate technologies in the agro-processing industry.
Upon completion, the Hopeville Housing Project will build a minimum 15 000 housing units, a mall, schools and an 18-hole golf course.
The Turning Matabeleland Green (TMG) Tomato Processing Plant on the other hand, processes 150 tonnes of tomatoes a day and produces about 30 tonnes of tomato juice every day.
In its election manifesto, the ruling party Zanu-PF promised 1.5 million houses if voted into power, a figure to which many critiques raised their voices calling it a pipe dream. It also pledged improvements in the agriculture sector.
This visit seems to be a step towards achieving the ambitious goals and many wait to see if it will bring the anticipated change.
