President Emmerson Mnangagwa yesterday urged churches to be ambassadors of the country’s economic transformative agenda.
He made the call at the National Sports Stadium in Harare while addressing thousands of Zion Christian Church (ZCC- Mbungo) congregants during the church’s National Day of Prayer for Peace and National Economic Transformation Service.

“I recently attended World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, Switzerland where I informed the global business community that Zimbabwe is now open and ready for business. It is the role of the church to buttress this message through playing an ambassadorial role to attract foreign investors who can help us to transform our economy on the basis of national interest, mutual trust, equity and win- win engagements,” President Mnangagwa said.
He emphasised churches have to be ambassadors in this economic transformative agenda by helping to build a society free of crime, which shuns corruption and whose values are anchored on hard work, honesty, diligence and integrity.
The country’s economy has not been doing well for more than a decade due to economic sanctions.
President Mnangagwa also said Government remains committed to upholding constitutionally enshrined rights, including freedom of worship.
“Zimbabwe is founded on fundamental values which recognize the nation’s diverse religions and freedom of worship. Our national constitution in Section 60 subsection 1 states that every person has the right to freedom of conscience, which includes freedom of religion and belief,” he added.
Speaking on the same occasion, ZCC leader, Bishop Nehemiah Mutendi, said the aim of the gathering, which commenced on February 2 to February 4, was to pray for the country’s economy, peace and for rain.
