The Bulawayo City Council (BCC) has began a week long disinfection of the city in its fight against the deadly corona virus.
The disinfection, which commenced this week using police water cannons, is meant to kill the Coronavirus in the city’s hotspots using hydrogen peroxide.
Bulawayo has so far recorded one case of Covid-19 following the death of a 79 year old man.
This publication witnessed the spraying of the Central Business District (CBD) which covered areas around Herbert Chitepo street, 6th avenue, Fort street, Egodini terminus and 5th Avenue.
After a media tour of the exercise, Bulawayo Divisional Environmental Health officer, Dr Patrick Ncube said the initiative is Government supported and will be rolled out to residential areas, in both high and low density surbabs once the city is done spraying the CBD.
“We believe in a one city concept. What we do in the CBD we will do in residential areas. We will advise when we are done in the CBD and are moving to residential areas,” said Mr Ncube
He said Government provided the city with 750 litres of the chemical, saying it was too early to tell if the chemical would be enough for the whole program.
Dr Dube said: “This program is going to take four days in the CBD. We started yesterday and we are ending on Friday. It’s a government initiative so we got 30 by 25litre containers of hydrogen peroxide. For now it’s difficult to tell if it will be enough for the identified areas but in case we run out, the suppliers promised to provide more. The vehicles have a capacity of 4500litres. So we pour 45 litres in each vehicle following the dilution factor.”
He advised residents to stay indoors after 3pm to avoid gettimg caught up in the sprayig process.
Harare hotspots such as Mbare market and several termini were sprayed last week in a similar initiative
